meandering thoughts and farm kids

There is always something to do here, and every weekend Will can be found working alongside Grant.  Collecting and splitting firewood, helping with fencing, carting water and he even helps Grant with the woodroaches which is something I refuse to go near.  When Grant wants to take a rest, Will often hassles him to "Get back to work Dad!"  which always makes me chuckle.  He has always been a beautiful kid, but by golly, he is thriving here in ways I couldn't have imagined.  Grant is always inclusive and patient with the boys as they learn to work alongside him and I'll never tire of watching them all together.

We are working on the yurt yard currently.  The posts are in, end assemblies are done and the wires have been strung and tensioned.  Grant had hoped they would get the mesh on but they didn't quite get there this weekend.  Fortunately, there is always next weekend.

We are in for some good rain this week and it has been on and off all night.  It is much needed and I'm happily tucked up in the yurt today listening to it fall on the roof as I work on various writing projects.  This place has certainly given me plenty of writing material!

Grant and I went for a walk an early morning walk on Sunday while the boys played a computer game.  Going for a short walk alone has become one of the nice little things we do, snatching 20 mins of time alone has become more important than ever now we live in a 30ft yurt.  When we were walking and talking Grant mentioned he didn't feel the desire to watch 4WD or "move to the country" TV shows anymore because he was here, finally living his ultimate dream.

I realized it was all worth it.  The pushing ourselves, the frustration, the renovating, the long hours.  Because all of that got us here.

We have a job list longer than our arms combined, and life here is pretty basic in many ways.  It's going to take time, money and a whole of hard work to get the farm the way we envision.  But we are here none the less, and I know that together we have the skills, and ability to learn what we need to make it happen.

The boys are settled and happy, and they can't wait to grow our little managery of animals further.  Angus is such a gentle soul who has a natural way with animals.  Henry loves being involved in everything whether it is working with me in the kitchen, or with Grant outside, and Will has become a valuable little farm hand.

Always a helper or three around here!

Grant telling me to "put the camera away..."  Sorry love!

We are all learning a lot and the nice part is we are here doing it together.  "Home" is certainly our favourite place to be.

Much love,
Emma
